Manufacturers in Kano State, part of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), plan to bypass local electricity distribution companies (Discos) and secure direct power supply from the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) to address chronic power shortages hampering industrial operations, as announced on August 24, 2025.
During a recent meeting in Abuja, a 20-member MAN delegation, led by Dala Foods Managing Director Ali Madugu, urged NDPHC to include Kano manufacturers in its Eligible Customer Programme.
“Our members have the capacity and willingness to procure power directly from NDPHC. Access to reliable electricity is critical for reviving industries and sustaining jobs in Kano State,” - Madugu.
NDPHC’s Managing Director, Jennifer Adighije, confirmed the company’s readiness to supply power within regulatory and infrastructural limits, citing improved capacity at plants like Omotosho and Alaoji. “We are committed to partnering with the manufacturing sector to drive industrial growth, create jobs, and enhance socio-economic development,” Adighije said. She noted NDPHC’s goal to commercialize 200 megawatts of its 2,000 megawatts of stranded electricity by the end of 2025, criticizing Discos for low uptake.
NDPHC’s Executive Directors Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama and Bello Babayo Bello provided a roadmap for direct power access, pending regulatory approval. The discussions concluded with both parties optimistic about a partnership to strengthen Kano’s industrial sector.
